A monoprint collage of a hare suddenly encountered at the edge of a field in Fersfield, Norfolk by Deborah Vass

The Unexpected Hare is a monoprint collage of a hare encountered at the edge of a field margin in Fersfield, Norfolk, made with hand-painted papers.

It appeared suddenly, as hares often do—already there before it is fully seen. For a moment it holds, alert and listening, poised between stillness and flight, before slipping back into the cover of the grasses.

These field margins are places of meeting, where cultivated land gives way to rough growth, and where such encounters happen quietly and without warning.

Built through layers of monoprint and collage, the surface carries the textures of grasses and seed heads, allowing the hare to emerge and recede within the same space.

It measures 28cmm x 35cm and is unframed.

The images show the full painting and two details of the work.

It is painted on 300gsm Saunders Waterford paper and archival glue is used for the collage.
