Rooks in Winter

Original Drypoint Engraving

Each year, at the Winter Solstice, I travel to the North Norfolk coast to walk the shoreline and witness the arrival of migratory birds. It has become a quiet personal ritual that marks the turning of the year.

I always return, too, to Baconsthorpe Castle — a haunting ruin set deep within the Norfolk countryside. This engraving developed from a rapid sketch made at the close of a freezing day there. Just as I prepared to leave, rooks, jackdaws and crows swept across the bare treetops, gathering to roost against the fading light.

The moment was brief and full of movement, and this engraving became a way of holding that passing scene.

This work forms part of an ongoing study of trees and birdlife observed in the Norfolk landscape.

This original drypoint is printed in black ink on Fabriano Rosaspina 300gsm paper.

The edition is limited to 30 prints. Each impression is signed and numbered, and subtle variations in the inking process ensure every print retains the character of a hand-pulled work.

Paper size: approximately 28cm × 20.5cm
Plate size: 14cm × 15cm

Your print will be carefully wrapped, supported with sturdy board, and posted flat to ensure it arrives in perfect condition.

Orders are dispatched from my Norfolk studio within 48 hours via Royal Mail Signed For and Tracked.

All original works are prepared with great care. Prints are signed and sent flat.
