Crack Willow
Original Drypoint engraving
The aptly named Salix fragilis, or crack willow, is a vigorous and somewhat unruly tree commonly found across the Norfolk landscape. Its name derives from the sharp ‘crack’ of splitting wood — a tendency borne out by the specimens at the foot of my garden, which carry the visible scars of several winter storms.
I am drawn to the way these willows lean out over water, extending their limbs with a quiet persistence that speaks of both vulnerability and endurance.
This engraving forms part of an ongoing study of trees observed in the Norfolk landscape.
